Marina Gall - Further Perspective

Technology in Music Initial Teacher Education

In this chapter I draw upon the work of Gena Greher and Jay Dorfman, teacher educators working in Massachusetts, to compare and contrast music initial teacher education (ITE) in the USA with the system in England. This includes discussion of the structure of the teacher education programmes, the impact of the differing school curricula on teacher education in each country, novice teachers’ opportunities for using technology when on school placements, and continuing professional development for practising school teachers. I also add to reflections on the English system of ITE for secondary music teachers presented by Jonathan Savage in his earlier chapter, raising issues related to gender, and new forms of ITE that have emerged of late.
